Nicknames like “The Steel City”, the “City of Champions”, and the “Paris of Appalachia” are just a few ways to describe the city of Pittsburgh. When it comes down to it, Pittsburgh is the definition of a “Hidden Gem”. The city is an oasis in the heart of nature…the sightseeing is varied and entertaining and a trip to Fallingwater is a visit to another hidden gem. Fallingwater is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most famous houses. Situated in the beautiful Laurel Highlands, the house is cantilevered over a mountain waterfall and is considered one of the most important examples of modern architecture in the world. Come along with us on this fall adventure to Pittsburgh and more!
Day 1: We depart this morning for our drive to western Pennsylvania and the city of Pittsburgh. Our first stop will be at the Duquesne Incline, a century-old funicular, one of the few remaining in the nation! Enjoy a ride to the top before checking into the Drury Inn and enjoying tonight’s Kickback Reception.
Day 2: We will depart after breakfast for the National Aviary, home to more than 500 birds and 150 species. It is the country’s largest aviary and the only aviary given “National” status by the United States Congress. This afternoon we will visit the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a steel and glass Victorian greenhouse that has showcased the beauty and mysteries of plants since 1893. After returning to the hotel to refresh for the evening, we depart for tonight’s dinner cruise on the historic Gateway Clipper for their BBQ Lock’n Dam Dinner Cruise. Dining and cruising on the Three Rivers with the Pittsburgh skyline, “The City of Bridges” is the most perfect point of view! B, D
Day 3: After breakfast we will check out and depart for Mill Run, PA. Here we will enjoy a guided tour of Fallingwater, a Frank Lloyd Wright designed house considered to be one of the greatest architectural triumphs of the 20th Century. We will depart after our tour for our return trip home. Plan to arrive early this evening with memories of a wonderful getaway to The Golden Triangle. B
