Day 1: We depart this morning for our drive south and arrive in Birmingham to check into the Drury Inn & Suites for our two-night stay. Tonight, we will enjoy the Kick-Back Reception at the Drury and the evening is at our leisure.
Day 2: After our included breakfast we will visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, a cultural and educational research center that promotes a comprehensive understanding of the significance of civil rights in Birmingham. For lunch on your own explore the Five Points South neighborhood, a cultural hub brimming with history, charm, and an impressive selection of eateries. The afternoon finds us with our step-on-guide experiencing the pivotal role Birmingham had in the Civil Rights Movement. History comes to life as we visit the 16th Street Baptist Church, tragically known for the 1963 bombing that claimed the lives of four young girls, galvanizing the movement for equality. Hear stories of resilience and courage as you walk through Kelly Ingram Park, a powerful outdoor museum featuring sculptures and memorials that depict the struggles and triumphs of those who fought for justice. Dinner this evening is at Dreamland BBQ, a beloved southern institution for its mouthwatering ribs, savory BBQ sauce and authentic Alabama charm. We’ll return to the hotel after a unique day of sightseeing. B, D
Day 3: We depart after breakfast for Montgomery where we will meet our local guide and get ready for a day you will never forget! Our tour starts with a driving tour of historical sites around Montgomery where you will learn beyond the textbooks to see exactly where key points in history happened. We will stop at Rosa Parks Museum, National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and Parsonage. Lunch will be on your own as you explore downtown Montgomery. Our overnight is in Montgomery with our included dinner at Central Restaurant. B, D
Day 4: After breakfast we depart for Selma. Upon arrival we will visit the Voting Rights Museum, located in the Selma Historical District at the foot of the famous Edmund Pettus Bridge, the scene of ‘Bloody Sunday”. We will enjoy a boxed lunch and then walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Built in 1940, the bridge is named after Edmund Pettus, a former Confederate brigadier general, U.S. Senator, and state-level leader of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan. The bridge is now famous for the brutal Bloody Sunday beatings of civil rights marchers during the first march for voting rights. We will visit the Brown Chapel AME Church, a starting point for the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 and played a major role in the events that led to the adoption of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We will travel north to Birmingham where we will overnight at the Drury Inn and Suites. Our dinner is included at the Southern Kitchen Bar & Grille. B, L, D
